I was one of the first people out there to shoot the Zeiss Batis 85mm many years ago when Sony was still in its infancy. So when the opportunity presented itself to work with the Zeiss team to try out a few lenses, I was GAME!

I decided to start with the 40mm Zeiss Batis because it fits perfectly into the focal range of lenses that I’ve always loved. Anyone who’s followed me will tell you I shoot a lot with the 35mm and 50mm lenses. So the 40 was a match made in heaven for me.

We went to FD Photo Studio in Los Angeles where they have a rain studio that is pretty awesome. Below is a link to the video:

Even today there aren’t many alternatives to Sony FE lenses that are outside of the Sony family. Currently Zeiss offers 5 auto focus lenses that are quite a bit different than what Sony FE lenses offer.

Here are some of the main differences. The Zeiss Batis lenses are:

  • Lighter than Sony Lenses

  • Have a tighter mount with the camera which makes for better weather sealing

  • Offer very sharp focus

  • Are typically a little slower on the aperture end compared to their Sony counterparts, which is in large part why they are so much lighter.

As someone who loves wide aperture lenses, I gotta say the 40mm Batis didn’t disappoint in any way. I loved the speed at which it acquired and kept focus, especially in a tricky environment like rain drops falling in front of your subject in the studio. Below are the images taken during the shoot:
