Using MeFoto Tripods as Light Stands

www.funphotoworkshops.com

This production image was taken at my Miami workshop in May of this year....

Earlier this year at WPPI I bought 4 new Rotolights that I love.  After buying them I asked myself, "How in the world am I going to use these when I'm shooting solo?"  I HATE using lightstands because they just don't work (for me) since I travel so much.  It seems that if I use one that's light enough to take "on the go" it's too flimsy.  If I take one that's very durable and steady, it's WAY too heavy.  So what did I do?

The hot new item at WPPI were the MeFoto tripods made by Benro.  I already own a Benro carbon fiber tripod and LOVE it.  So I felt comfortable buying the MeFoto's and using them as lightstands.  My friends laughed at me at the time for buying 4 of them, but I am SO GLAD I did.

Since WPPI 2013 I've taken the MeFoto's with me to Miami, West Virginia, Montana, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, and all over California.  The combination of the MeFoto's with my Rotolights or an off camera flash with a Pocket Wizard just can't be beat.

Using Off Camera Flash during the daytime to create awesome drama

www.funphotoworkshops.com

FYI: This image is not HDR.  This is what happens when you expose for the background and use flash to light your subject.  This image was taken at my workshop in Miami in May.  Using my Pocket Wizards I fired my flash off camera which enabled me to set a different exposure level for my overall image.  A great way to create dramatic contrast in your images!

The Ticket Taker at the Warner Theater in Morgantown, WV

www.funphotoworkshops.com

This image was taken at the old Warner Theater in Morgantown, WV for my workshop there in April.  We did a pin up style shoot, found some old ticket stubs, and put the beautiful Jennifer Blosser behind the counter. I wanted her to have a look like you'd see on someone's face who was bored of working at her job....and I believe she pulled it off.  Fun times!

Camera settings: Nikon D800, 1/60 sec at f/4.0, 35mm at ISO 4000, flash did not fire.  Taken at 4:34pm.

Moundsville is one of my all time favorite places to shoot and I'm so glad I've had the opportunity to do so many times!  Looking to go back next month!!

This image was taken at my workshop in Oahu, Hawaii off the north shore by my attendee Minori Inoue.  It was a beautiful sunset and she sent me this shot which I REALLY appreciated!  I did a little editing magic on it, but the shot is all hers from what she took in the camera and it shows you just how much you can learn at one of my workshops....:)

Moundsville Mist at a Jason Lanier Supernatural Shoot

www.supernaturalshoots.com

This is a set of 3 images put side by side in Photoshop to show you something pretty interesting from my Supernatural shoot at the Moundsville State Penitentiary back in April 2013.  I shot this with my Nikon D800 which shoots at 4 frames per second, so these 3 shots were literally shot within less than a second of each other, all at 7:20pm, at 42 seconds.

This was of the model Rachel at the penitentiary and it was a blast.  You can decide what you think it is...I just noticed it immediately when I was looking through my pictures in Lightroom.  The mist is to the left of the model, and the only reason the flash didn't fire on the third picture was because it hadn't recycled quickly enough to do so.

The pictures haven't been enhanced in Photoshop, just stitched together side by side for comparison purposes.  Let me know what you think!

True Americana- the 4th of July

www.jasonlanier.com

What is more American than gathering around a huge group of strangers and coming together to celebrate the independence day of our amazing nation?  That's exactly what we did last night, and the fireworks show was amazing.  May God continue to bless America.

Camera settings: Nikon D800, 1/20 sec at f/4.0, 16mm at ISO 800, flash did not fire.  Taken at 9:32pm on July 4, 2013 by Jason Lanier.

A Day at the Park

www.jasonlanier.com

This image was taken at my family shoot for the Huang family in Westlake Village two days ago.  James and Kathryn were my wedding clients from a few years back and they (as do many clients) asked me to take their family portraits.  I love how the very gently swung Mia back and forth as they walked down the bridge of the Pagoda.  I really do love doing family sessions!

Camera settings: Nikon D800,  1/800 sec at f/5.6, 18mm at ISO 50, flash fired.  Taken at 12:08pm.

Mermaid in Maine

www.funphotoworkshops.com

This image was taken at my workshop in Maine/New Hampshire just last week.  We didn't have a mermaid outfit, so this dress was the closest thing we could find to it.  I just loved how it matched the tones of the background rocks and seaweed.  It was an awesome shoot and I can't wait to share more!  This image features the beautiful Belle who was one of our models.

This production image was taken at my Supernatural Shoot workshop yesterday at the Greystone Mansion in Cape Neddick.  We did an amazing supernatural shoot there, and right on cue a huge Thunder and Lightning storm came in, and I ended up shooting the models in the rain.  Just amazing.  This shot is from me doing my intro about the house.
